Structure Influences Function

Heading into Week 5 of our 15 Weeks to "Make the Most of Your Year".
So far, we’ve explored awareness, energy, mornings, and focus. If you are just joining us in reading this blog series. Please feel free to jump in at Week 5. But I would encourage you to read Weeks 1-4 so you know how we are building upon every week.
This week, we turn to something visible — but often ignored: Your posture.
Posture isn’t just about standing up straight. It’s about how your body supports itself against gravity all day, every day. And over time, posture shapes more than appearance — it shapes function.
Your Spine Was Designed for Movement and Support

In our last blog, we touched on the importance of your brain regulating your nervous system. Your spine protects your spinal cord, which carries messages between your brain and body. When your spine is balanced and moving properly, your nervous system can communicate efficiently - and easy movement is possible when all things are "aligned".
But modern life challenges that design.
Hours of sitting. Looking down at devices. Driving. Leaning forward at desks.

Gradually, posture shifts:
Head moves forward
Shoulders round
Upper back tightens
Lower back compresses
>>> These changes don’t usually happen overnight. They happen slowly — and quietly. Until stiffness, tension, headaches, or fatigue become routine.
Posture Affects More Than Your Back and Neck
Poor posture doesn’t just strain muscles. It can influence:
Breathing capacity
Circulation
Energy levels
Focus
Stress response
When the head moves just one inch forward, it significantly increases the load on the neck and upper spine. Over time, this added strain can contribute to nervous system stress and decreased efficiency.
Structure influences function — every single day.
Week 5 Focus: Build Postural Awareness
This week is about correcting small patterns before they become larger problems.

Your 7-Day Posture Power-grab:
Perform a daily posture check. Stand sideways in a mirror. Is your ear aligned over your shoulder? Are your shoulders rolled forward? Awareness is the first step.
Practice chin tucks and shoulder resets. Gently draw your head back over your shoulders and roll your shoulders down and back. Hold for 5 seconds. Repeat several times daily.
Evaluate your workspace. Is your screen at eye level? Are your feet flat on the floor? Are you taking standing or walking breaks every hour?
Call today and come see us for an evaluation and adjustment (408) 984-7444. Be consistent with your spinal care appointments.
Small corrections, repeated consistently, create structural change over time.
Posture Reflects How You Move Through Life
Posture influences confidence. It affects breathing. It changes how others perceive you — and how you perceive yourself. When you stand taller, breathe deeper, and move more freely, you reinforce strength and stability — both physically and mentally.

Good posture isn’t rigid. It’s balanced. It’s dynamic. It’s adaptable.
Don’t Let Modern Habits Shape Your Future Health
Technology isn’t going away. Sitting won’t disappear. But awareness allows you to interrupt negative patterns before they accumulate.
This week, notice:
How often you look down
How long you sit without moving
How your body feels at the end of the day
Then gently correct. You don’t need perfection, you need practice and progress.
Make the most of your posture — and you’ll support every other improvement you’re building this year.
