Excerpt from Chapter 2: American's Don't Like Drugs
"Poisons and medicines are oftentimes the same substance given with different intent."
– Peter Latham, Neuro Scientist
“I have surveyed close to 7000 people with this question: 'If you had a health problem and it could be handled equally well with a natural remedy or with a drug, who would prefer a drug?' This is an interesting phenomenon. It seems no matter where or to whom this question is posed, virtually everyone wants a natural remedy.
So many of us take drugs so frequently and for so many different problems that we may not even be aware of exactly what a drug is. I’ve found in conducting employment interviews with M.D.’s that even they – the people who prescribe drugs for so many health concerns – aren’t quite sure what the definition of a drug is. One definition from a book entitled 'The Truth About Drugs: The Body, Mind and You,' by Gene Chill and John Duff is, A drug is a substance that is:
1.) Taken internally,
2.) is used to remove one from an unwanted condition, and
3.) is upsetting to the body’s natural chemistry.
So when I ask, 'Why do you prefer not to have drugs', the most consistent responses are:
1.) Drugs are toxic.
2.) Don’t like the side effects.
3.) Drugs are expensive.
4.) They don’t work.
Let’s explore these a little more in-depth.
Drugs Are Toxic
Even when therapeutically necessary, drugs are foreign substances with toxic effects on the body. They are not food and therefore are not part of the body’s normal digestive and nutritive processes – they are a pollutant. When I ask the follow-up question – 'What does toxic mean?', people respond, 'poisonous.' Finally, I ask. 'So, you think drugs are poisonous?' For the most part, they say yes, drugs are poisonous. They hesitate only because they supposed toxicity must be death-inducing to be considered poisonous, and they are taking their medications every day and they haven’t died yet. More about this shortly.
Yes, drugs are poisonous. Now, I ask the most interesting question: 'So, you say drugs are poisons…are some drugs toxic/poisonous, or are all drugs toxic/poisonous?' Most know that some are toxic, but are unsure whether all drugs are – and they certainly hope the drugs they are taking are not toxic. My ultimate goal is for people to be armed with all the information, and that they fully understand and can make informed decisions, so I share with my audiences that I once posed this question to a drug company executive in my audience. His response was this: 'Yes, all drugs are toxic. That’s why I’m here at your seminar. I’ve developed diabetes and I don’t want to take the drugs.' Medical doctors themselves respond in the same way – 'Yes, all drugs are toxic.'
I trust I’m making my point...”
